{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when track officials were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the events
"Following a turn one incident, race control was advised that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and placed on standby to access the circuit and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what happened after that point"
